SCR Engines May Emit Toxins, CARB Staffer’s Letter Warns PDF Print E-mail

This story appears in the Aug. 10, 2009 print edition of Transport Topics.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process, which uses a blend of pure urea and demineralized water, that most engine manufacturers will use to comply with 2010 federal diesel emission standards could emit toxic byproducts, the California Air Resources Board’s top researcher wrote in a recent letter filed in federal court by Navistar Inc.

SOLID WASTE COLLECTION VEHICLE RULE VEHICLE APPLICABILITY

The California Air Resources Board's (ARB) Solid Waste Collection Vehicle rule was adopted in September of 2003 and is now in effect. The purpose of this advisory is to clarify the application of this rule to vehicles not specifically designed to collect residential and commercial solid waste for a fee and not used primarily for that purpose.

RE: ARB Solid Waste Collection Vehicle Rule (For Advisory #368)

Dear CDTOA members:

In September 2003, the California Air Resources Board (ARB) adopted the Solid Waste Collection Vehicle rule (Title 13 California Code of Regulations Sections 2020-2021.2). The rule essentially requires every owner of one or more collection vehicles to ensure vehicle compliance with heightened diesel particulate matter control measures, as specified in the rule.
